First Sunday of Advent November 28, 2021

*Call to Worship:
Leader: Prepare the way of the Lord,
People: Make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
Leader: Lift up your heads, O gates!
Be lifted up, O ancient doors!
People: Be lifted up, O ancient doors
that the King of glory may come in!

*Hymn: # 2018 (TFWS) “Honor and Praise”

The Lighting of the Advent Wreath
Leader: "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness -- on them light has shined... For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:2, 6)
Leader: Today we remember the prophets of old, who demanded to be heard, who dared to speak of a child to come, unexpected liberator of the people, vulnerable incarnation of the Holiest of Holies, a new name for God.
People: Today we give thanks for the prophets among us, who bring to us surprising new visions of hope, who challenge us to see ourselves and our world through the eyes of Christ, who show us a future we never anticipated.
Leader: On this first Sunday of Advent, we light this candle as a symbol of the prophets who renew our faith and remind us of what may be. Let us pray:
People: Almighty and eternal God, who long ago prepared men, women and children for the arrival of your Son, and whose spirit continues now to work to illumine our darkened lives with the light of the Gospel: Prepare now our spirits that Christ may dwell in us, and ever reign in our thoughts and values. Most mighty and loving God, bestow upon us your light, that we may turn away from the darkness of our hearts and embrace the King of love and the very Prince of Peace. In his name we pray. Amen.
